Numerical simulation and optimization of aerodynamic uplift force of a high-speed pantograph

Abstract Aiming at the problem that aerodynamic uplift forces of pantograph running in knuckle-downstream and knuckle-upstream conditions are inconsistent, their magnitudes do not satisfy corresponding standard, pantographs with baffles numerically investigated, an optimization method to determine baffle angle is proposed. First, error between resistances obtained by numerical simulation wind tunnel test less than 5%, which indicates accuracy method. Second, original equipped three different simulated obtain moments components. Three angles for ?17°, 0° 17°. Then multibody used calculate force pantograph, optimal range determined. Results show lift increases increment condition, whereas decreases condition. According results force, determined be 4.75° when speed 350 km/h, pantograph–catenary contact 128.89 N 129.15 under operating conditions, respectively, almost equal both meet requirements standard EN50367:2012.
